What are the Six Dimensions of WellnessKenneth H Cooper quoted that there are six components or dimensions of wellness. They are proper weight and diet, proper exercise, breaking the smoking habit, control of alcohol, stress management and periodic exams. Almost everyone knows that smoking, drinking excessive alcohol and having too much stress is bad for mental and physical health. Most find it difficult to let the habits and addictions go. But if you want to have a sound physical and mental health and a healthy state of wellbeing free from disease, there is no alternative but to must make some lifestyle changes. Just like how you've developed some bad health habits through repetition, you can start new ones. You can begin with the easy ones and as you move along, do more and make bigger changes. "True enjoyment comes from activity of the mind and exercise of the body; the two are ever united." - Karl Wilhelm von Humboldt Ways to WellnessPressures at work, family issues, and financial and relationship problems are among the reasons we feel stressed. Too much of it can cause numerous ailments. One of the ways to reduce stress in your life is to stop worrying about things that you can't control. Manage the things that are within your power of influence like your attitude and response to situations. Even if you are busy, allocating just about 15 minutes a day for some light exercise shouldn't be a problem. Taking fifteen minutes out of your daily schedule to take a brisk walk around the block is beneficial to your health. If you can't spare that little bit time for your wellbeing, you may need to look at your time management. Cut down on your solid fat intake. You must have heard that your LDL or "bad" cholesterol increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. It is wise to keep your cholesterol level balanced. The simplest thing you can do is drinking more black tea each day. It is supposed to limit cholesterol absorption in the intestines. Your diet should include plenty of vegetables, fruits and juices. Include whole grain products and fish. Cut on your salt intake to reduce your blood pressure. According to researchers, laughter secrets natural hormones in your brain that can help calm your anxieties and help your immune system fight off disease. Even if you don't believe it, why not just laugh more often. It brings more joy to your life and to those around you. One of the other ways to increase your health is to have sufficient good night sleep. Lack of sleep contributes to moodiness, lack of focus and irritability. You may not require 8 hours of sleep. You should know how much is sufficient. The problem arises when you have difficulty sleeping. Tossing in bed for a few hours trying to snooze can make you feel worse that having only 5 hours of good sleep. If you act upon the suggestions stated above and also avoid caffeine and alcohol before you get in bed, you will sleep better and get enough rest. Mental soundness is as important as physical health. When you think good thoughts, you will act accordingly and live healthy. Avoid the feelings of guilt and regrets from your system. Forget the past that you cannot change. Plan for your future but live in the present. Do things that you love and set your goals high. Find something good or positive in or around you each day and feel thankful.
