What is Tolerance

Tolerance is an admirable virtue in this world where people have different opinions, practices, beliefs, and lifestyles. Most people who are open minded and flexible develop a high acceptance level and patience because they know the importance of living in harmony.

They have come to an understanding about life and people and have learned to accept and endure other people's idiosyncrasies, irritating behaviors and attitudes. They allow people to live and preach the way they choose. They may question and disagree only when they reason that enough is enough and they've had it with all the nonsense.

But of course there are many more people who think they are supreme and you aren't allowed to question them. There are those who have zero tolerance and are unwilling to recognize and respect differences in opinions or beliefs. These people can make you feel miserable when you are around them.

When Is Tolerance Unacceptable?

Sometimes people look outside of themselves and complain about their intolerance toward other people and things that are happening around them. These same people fail to notice or aren't aware of their own bad habits, wrong attitude, and inadequacies.

The worst is when they are aware but are indifferent. They don't care to change themselves or their conditions. Their forbearance is unjustified.

Rather than looking outside, it's best that you take a hard look at yourself. Are you tolerating your own stupidity and ignorance? Are you giving yourself too much leeway and are just drifting along? Are you being too lenient with yourself and giving too many excuses for the lack in your life?

What You Shouldn't Tolerate

"Tolerance is another word for indifference." - William Somerset Maugham

bullet2 Self doubt.

When you doubt yourself, you are afraid to venture out. Imagine where you will end up a few years down the road if you keep on feeling unsure of yourself. It is important that you question your limiting beliefs. You have to dig within you for the answers.

bullet2 Indecision.

One of the reasons that you can't decide is because you lack the necessary information. Knowledge is important. You can't allow yourself not to learn, read and ask questions.

bullet2 Indifference.

This is your life. If you don't care, nobody would. You must have goals to pursue that mean a lot to you. Look at your life right now and see what are the habits that you should drop and the things that you have neglected.

bullet2 Indiscipline.

You must develop self discipline because without it, you will drift away and lose sight of where you are heading. Be firm and push yourself not to accept mediocrity. Don't take the lackadaisical approach.

bullet2 Being Judgmental.

Don't try to become a moralist and self righteous. Refrain from making judgments on other people's conduct.

bullet2 Dependency.

Develop self control. You shouldn't rely on people or things for your joy, happiness and fulfillment.

bullet2 Self critical.

Try not to be too critical of your faults and weaknesses. Acknowledge and admit them and make corrective actions.
