What is teamwork? According to Andrew Carnegie, teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision and organizational objectives. He further stated that it is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.


An effective team is able to reach a goal faster and easier because of the collective efforts. Everyone within a team has a specific role to perform for a common goal but at the same time each person is jointly responsible for the overall result.


Each person in a team has his strengths, skills, views and experiences and when explored and combined will produce ground breaking ideas. Working as a team promotes good interaction, creativity, trust, comradeship and support. Being in a team helps a person value time management, becomes accountable and helps him understand that healthy competition is good.

An effective team of employees benefits any organization because they will participate in the organizational goals instead of just going after their individual objectives. Employees who have a sense of belonging in an organization help the company by improving productivity and commitment and reducing absenteeism and turnover.

For an individual to perform well in a team, he must know, understand and see the goal of the organization. In addition to knowing what the goal is and why it is important to the organization, an employee must also know the dateline to reach the goal and the action steps he has to take.

When the goal is set, everyone in the team will know his role, assignments, his direction and how his performance will be measured. Every employee needs acknowledgement for his efforts and the motivation to continue to reach the organizational goal. A leader should praise the team's creativity, diligence, commitment and resourcefulness.

Combined individual efforts produce a winning team. Offer rewards to the team when it has accomplished the organizational goal. This will promote and encourage future cooperation among the team members. And to encourage healthy competition, reward any individual for his special contribution.
