Social anxiety disorder is a condition that can lead to low self esteem and depression. And as a result becomes a barrier to personal growth and success in life. Sufferers missed the opportunity to do well in interviews, get promotions, and secure a date, hold on to a job long enough, and make new friends and so on because of the fear of people and situations.
People with social anxiety or social phobias are very self conscious. They believe that they are always being watched and judged by others and because of this they feel awkward in the presence of other people. They feel easily humiliated, ashamed and embarrassed of themselves.
Because of their fears and focusing on not making mistakes and on what they are going to say or do, they usually stumble, stammer or freeze. They will feel awful afterwards even if they can't remember what they said or did. They think that they have made a fool of themselves.
The physical symptoms of social anxiety disorder are blushing easily, sweating a lot, trembling and feeling like throwing up. This is usually felt before they face a situation or someone, especially someone of authority or anyone whom they think are superior. They will freeze in they have to speak in either a formal or informal situation.
Though there have been many investigations and researches done to determine the causes of social anxiety disorder, there is still no concrete answer. But there are some evidences which point to the response on the part of the brain that controls fear responses, genes and learning and modeling behaviors during childhood and the growing years.
"All too frequently, anxiety crushes not only your spirit and your potential, but your ability to take care of your mind and body." - Jonathan Davidson and Henry Dreher
There are social phobic who turn to alcohol or drugs to make their fears go and to drown their emotional problems. This is an unwise decision because it can lead to addiction and more complications. One of the best social anxiety treatment and cure is to go for cognitive behavior therapy.
The major part of the treatment is the exposure therapy. Patients are introduced to what may seem like a frightening social situation. They are then guided to feel comfortable in it. The next stage is to put them in another situation where they will possibly face rejection, criticism and disapproval. The sufferers are guided to build their confidence. And the next phase is to teach them techniques on how to cope with disapproval.
Another helpful technique in the cure of social anxiety disorder is the anxiety management treatment. Patients are taught on how to use the correct breathing technique to manage their anxieties. They are also coached on how to identify their wrong judgments and develop realistic expectations and better outlook. They'll learn how to develop their social skills and the group therapy helps in building a support network.
Taking natural and herbal remedies would also help overcome social anxiety. Native Remedies have quite a number of homeopathic remedies for anxiety such as Social Fear Relief. It may provide temporarily relief from social fear, nervousness and shyness.
