Reinventing yourself becomes necessary when the "old you" has not made any personal growth for a while or when you have lost your joy and passion. When you find that your job, your relationship and everything within and around you are at a standstill, it's time to take a serious look at your life.
Reinventing your life may include an image make-over. But what's more important is not working on your physical appearance, though it will help in certain circumstances like if you need to shed the excess weight, but on your self image. This image is the one that you hold on your mind about who you are and what you are capable of doing or not doing.
Being "I am who I am" is a great motto. But you may have to redefine yourself and recreate a new identity if being who you are right now is making you feel uncomfortable, unhappy and lifeless. You can go back in time and recall what you did when you felt passionate about something and bring that zest and fervor back into your life.
Or you can start all over. You can choose to raise your standards and chart a new course. It's easier this time around because you have collected some of the best life experiences and could use some as lessons. Another option in reinventing yourself is to study and use the experiences of other people who have successfully made major life improvements and emulate them.
Why reinvent the wheel when all you need to do is use what has been tried and tested and make minor changes that suit you better. Other than recreating an improved image of self, here are some of the common strategies successful people do which you can use in reinventing yourself.
What is life without having personal goals to work on? If you don't have a list of goals, it could be one of the reasons why your life is so mundane. There is no motivation to even get out of bed in the morning.
So set your goals. It doesn't matter how young or old you are and in what stage or phase of life you're in. Setting personal and passionate goals is a must-do to motivate and inspire you to move on.
List down everything you don't like, don't have and don't want. Although that may sound negative, it's actually what you've been thinking and feeling. It's just that you haven't written them down and come face to face with your dissatisfaction.
Then write down everything that you want to have, to become and to experience and all the things that you love to do. Make it a long list so that you always have something to work on especially once you have achieved one goal.
You will tend to procrastinate if you feel overwhelmed and don't know where and how to reinvent yourself. To overcome procrastination, you must do two things. One of them is to write down an action plan or to do list. The other thing you need to do is break them down further into smaller action steps.
This exercise will give you a sense of relief and make you see that you actually can do one thing and take one step at a time. And it will help prevent you from majoring in minor things such as involving in activities that won't bring any or much value towards the attainment of your goals and in reinventing yourself.
One of the reasons why most of us get what we don't like and don't want is because of our focus of attention. So in reinventing yourself, you need to focus on what you want. It's easier to interrupt your negative pattern of thoughts if you have clear goals. Whenever you start to feel overwhelmed, what you need to do is remind yourself of your goals and the reasons why you want them.
It does take self discipline and effort initially to divert your attention. To make the process of change easier, practice visualization combined with positive affirmations daily. What it means is that you create images or pictures in your mind of having accomplished the goal you are working on and reinforce it with positive statements and put your attention on these images.
What worked once may no longer work this time around. Some things have become obsolete. New and advanced tools have emerged and technology has advanced. There is more than one method and there are also better and faster ways to do something and achieve a certain result. So get the knowledge and learn new skills and hone your existing ones.
Sometimes, in the need to remain consistent, some people don't want to let go of the old and embrace change. This includes the people they associate and deal with. In reinventing yourself and your life, take a look with whom you hang around with because people you most relate to can subtly influence your way of life.
Drop those or limit your association with the people who do nothing but rain on your parade or have a pessimistic outlook of life. In reinventing yourself, get out, make new friends and expand your network. Look for people who are inspired and from whom you can learn something of value.
