How to Improve Low Self Image
Your self image is your perception or mental picture of who you are. And your opinion about yourself determines your attitude, personality, behavior, actions and how you interact with others. A negative self image or poor self-image affects your body image and self esteem.
The negative self image is not the true you. You have been conditioned to believe who you are after you've heard repeated criticisms from adults during your growing up years.
The good news is, you can change and improve poor self-image at any age. But you must really want to change to make it work.
You must change the picture you have been holding of yourself. You can "delete" those old images and "install" new ones. In your imagination you can create, change and delete anything.
Changing how you think and act inside your brain will change your attitude, emotions and behavior. Imagine the new you, the person that you would like to become. Imagine it vividly and add emotional intensity. Repeat the visualization exercise twice daily and act as if you have already acquired the new image.
You must like your body. You will do things that destroy your body if you feel bad about it. If you have not been accepting your physical appearance, you should evaluate your thinking first and then work on changing your body image. A poor opinion about your body will cause you to feel inferior and is a barrier to your social interaction with others.
A negative self image weakens your confidence. You can create new reference experience to give you the boost. Take a different action and do something you were afraid of to move out of your comfort zone. New experiences will break your thinking patterns. Your self worth will improve when your opinion about yourself expands.
Your beliefs affect the results and experiences in your life. So if you want to experience a positive image, more joy, happiness or a better relationship you must believe that it is possible.
You created your beliefs by attaching emotions to your thoughts. You can change your present limiting beliefs by questioning them. Write down what and who you think you are, question yourself, find the answers and keep asking until you reach a threshold and start doubting them.
Without your conscious awareness, you have been affirming that you have low self image in the form of endless self talk, internal chatters and self criticisms. It is burdensome to monitor and notice them. What you can do is to observe your emotions. When you get a feeling that is associated with the negative, pause and try to notice what you have been saying to yourself.
Do the same with positive emotions. This will enable you to cancel the disempowering talks. Replace them with positive affirmations such as "I choose to feel confident" or "I choose to like myself".
