A therapist would describe hypnosis as an artificially induced state of relaxation and concentration in which deeper parts of the mind become more accessible. In layman terms it can mean instructing the mind to deeply relax and getting into a trance state.
In the past, people associate it with the negative. They think that being hypnotized means they will be instructed to do things against their will. However, the perception has changed. Many people have begun to understand that it is a very useful tool and have started using it to stop smoking, lose weight, improve self esteem and visualization skills.
You do go in and out of trance state naturally every day. Some times while driving, watching a movie or listening to a talk. An example is when you suddenly realized that you have taken the wrong exit while driving on a freeway. You may also have experienced at times when someone snaps his finger at you without you realizing that you were not really in the present moment.
But this trance state doesn't help input new programming. You need to be able to slow down your brain waves. If you aren't familiar with deep breathing exercise and haven't learned or practiced to quiet your mind, you can't get into the alpha state.
