Tips on How to Stop Worrying

Put Your Worries on Paper

Write down everything that you are worried about. It you are worried about your health for example, you would also probably agonize about medical bills, your future and even death. Once you have finished, look at your written list. Identify which of the worry is within your control.

Write Your Action Steps

When you have identified the issue that is within your control, write down what you can do to solve the problem. If it's a health issue, you can include doable things such as quitting smoking, eating healthy and exercising. If you have financial worries, among the things that you can do would include drawing out a budget, living more frugal, start using cash for purchases instead of credit and starting a second source of income.

Take Action

You obtain results by doing. So, take action on the things that you can do and should do. At the start of a week, list what you plan to do every day. Do the things and monitor your progress at the end of the week.

The 3 techniques on how to stop worrying mentioned above are necessary but aren't sufficient. This is because your worries and apprehensions reside in your mind. As long as you have thoughts such as "I can't stop worrying" and mental images corresponding to the worry, it's difficult to experience freedom from worry. You will also need to work from the inside out.

Shift Your Habitual Thought Pattern

You can kick the worry habit by changing your thought pattern. Usually when you start to think of something that causes concern, you would probably focus on it. Corresponding thoughts will develop. Your state of mind will shift from being slightly concerned to that of fear, anger and so on.

Make a conscious effort to monitor your thoughts or emotions so that you can do a pattern interrupt. When you notice a negative self talk, an uncomfortable feeling or a negative image in your mind, stop it and start asking yourself questions.

You can ask questions such as:

  1. What triggers this thought?

  2. What am I feeling right now?

  3. What do I want to feel right now?

Asking questions will change your focus. So instead of blowing up the issue that causes concern, you will divert your attention to something else.

Make Use of The Law of Attraction

You attract what you think about most of the time especially if you attach strong emotions to the thought. One of the ways to let go of worry is to imagine, think and affirm positive and uplifting thoughts.

If worry has become a habit, allocate a little bit of quiet time at the end of your day to relax your mind. When you are in the relaxed state, create mental pictures of what you want instead of what you don't want to see, experience or happen in your life. If you have travel worries for example, instead of focusing on flight delays, losing your passport and so on, expect good things and imagine yourself enjoying the trip and having fun.

How to Stop Worrying - Points to Ponder

How often does the thing that you worry about materialize? Is it once, all the time or never? If it happened once, what makes you think that it will happen again? If it happens all the time, isn't it about time to take practical action steps so that it will not happen again. If the cause of your concern never materialized, don't you think that you have wasted your precious time in despair?

Ignore things and people that are beyond your control such as what others think of you. Put your efforts on things that you can improve. When you change your thoughts and actions from the negative to the positive, you will get a different result. Things and people around you would change too.

Live a healthy lifestyle which should include routine exercise and recreation. Physical exercise helps eliminate stress and reduce worries. If you eat healthy and quit smoking, you reduce the risk of getting sick, being overweight which would later cause you to worry about your health.

Use positive subliminal messages embedded in relaxing music, no more worries hypnosis or EFT tapping to assist you in kicking the worry habit. Emotional freedom technique is especially helpful in clearing fear and worry.
