How to be Happy

So you want to know how to be happy. The surest way to be happy is to feel happy. What you need to do is evoke pleasant and happy feelings like love, joy, bliss and excitement. Feeling any one of the many positive emotions will produce positive energy and change your state of mind.

But of course it isn't that easy. If it is then you wouldn't need any suggestions or find ways to be happy.


What Makes You Happy

You probably know all the reasons for your unhappiness. But do you know what will make you happy? If your happiness depends on other people, no wonder you feel miserable. Once a person doesn't meet your demands or needs, you will feel dejected.


Material things and physical objects also don't guarantee happiness. They do trigger some excitement but they are short-lived. If you have material wealth but have any kind of fear or feeling of unworthiness, you won't feel blessed.


If you are alone and feel lonely, learn to enjoy your own company. Many people struggle to find some alone time just to have their own personal space. While you have yours, appreciate it and make full use of it. Do what you love that brings about feelings of personal satisfaction and contentment.


If you are broke or knee deep in debt, worrying won't solve your problem. Putting yourself in a resourceful state will allow your mind to think of solutions.


So, the first tip on how to be happy is to rely on no one to create the feeling but you.


Think happy thoughts

Your thoughts are your mental pictures or images and inner chatters or self-talk. There are so many of them and they move so fast and are so silent, that you can't hear or see. The indication that they are present is in the way you are feeling in any moment.


What you can do when you are feeling overwhelmed is to consciously choose a happy thought. When you pick a good thought and focus on it, it will lead to a better thought. And when you focus on that better thought, you will create another positive one. Your state of mind and emotion will move up and change. If you do this often or whenever you feel out of sort, you are creating a new way of thinking and choosing how you want to feel.


Avoid the need to change people or things that you have no control

You can't change a person's attitude nor do you have control over certain things outside your circle of influence. You have two other options on how to be happy; to mope or to go living your life and create your own pleasant experiences.


There are many other ways to be happy. You can choose to listen to inspiring music, watch feel good movies, exercise, read or hang around with happy people. But when the effects are gone, you will have to stimulate yourself again. There is nothing wrong with choosing external stimulus. But they should only be additional reinforcement. The onus on how to be happy lies on no one and nothing but you.
