There are many diet trends such as the Atkins diet, South Beach diet, raw food, cabbage soup and so on. Some of them are healthy because they emphasize on eating nutritious foods. They include exercise routines in their programs and encourage dieters to eat frequently instead of starving themselves. There are also those that focus of quick weight loss by eating or drinking only certain foods, soups and juices but lack essential nutrients.


To lose weight and maintain it, you must eat small healthy meals and include physical exercise. And to have the motivation to follow through with dieting, look at it with a different paradigm or mindset. Besides thinking of losing weight, think of the health benefits. Go on a diet to lower bad cholesterol levels and to reduce the risk of diseases.


Eating refined and processed foods that contain lots of salt, sugar and very little nutrients can cause obesity which will result in diabetes. Bad LDL cholesterol increases when you eat too much saturated fat. Saturated fat is the fat that is found in full fat dairy products and animal fat. Stick with polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats that are as liquid as possible at room temperature. They are healthy for your heart.


Consume low fat or non-fat milk to avoid saturated fat. Soy milk is another alternative. Excess fats will clog your arteries and are going to make you feel lethargic and unhealthy. Your movements become limited and so does your overall health.

Stay away from promises that say that you that you can lose weight by swallowing a pill or two. Avoid methods that pledge you to lose weight without any physical effort or a nutrition plan. Check it out before you are tempted to try with the over-the-counter slimming pills. The ingredients may cause side effect that is harmful for your heart. You don't need to add more problems.


Although foods with low calories such as the cabbage soup diet will work, you will gain the weight back once you stop. Furthermore, you body needs essential vitamins and minerals to function effectively. That goes with other diet programs that don't provide a healthy balanced diet.

A US study shows that eating fast food more than twice a week has strong links with weight gain and insulin resistance.

Fiber makes you full faster and longer so you will eat less. It will help you control your weight. Eating lots of fiber foods is also healthy for your heart health. Make it 3 servings per day. Have high fiber cereals for breakfast with wheat bread, brown rice for lunch and whole wheat pasta for dinner.


Drink Lots of Fluids

Fluids prevent dehydration. Drink lots of nonalcoholic, decaffeinated liquids. Water is still the best liquid. Freshly squeezed fruit juices are also healthy.


Stay away from alcohol as it causes dehydration. Drink isotonic drinks or coconut water instead because they contain electrolytes and provide energy. When you are energized, you get more things done in less time.


Include Dietary Supplements

Take food supplements or vitamins according to the recommended dosage especially if you are cutting down on certain foods or don't get sufficient nutrients. Studies have shown that certain vitamins help build your immune system, increase your mental alertness and help you overcome fatigue.


Healthy Eating Habits


  1. It is recommended that you avoid food except fruits before going to bed and have your dinner before 9:00 p.m.


  2. Don't skip your breakfast if you want to control and manage your weight. That's your most important meal. Skipping breakfast will make you eat more during lunch and dinner.


  3. Eat grilled, broiled and steamed or raw food instead of fried.


  4. Eat your chicken with the skin removed.


  5. Eat slowly and refrain from talking while you are eating. When you gulp your food, beer or carbonated drinks, you swallow excessive amounts of air and results in gaseous build up. Avoid drinking through a straw for the same reason.

Exercise at least 3 times a week. Walk, jog, cycle or swim for about half an hour to burn your fats and do some weight training exercises to burn your calories and build muscle mass. Exercising will positively affect the production and activities of neurotransmitters in the brain. Your stress levels will reduce and you will feel happier.
