Overcoming Fear

The emotion of fear focuses on pain and danger. It is a negative mental image. When the thing you are afraid of becomes so intense, you will develop a phobia. The terror will stop you from doing anything. And if you have started something, you will get stuck and unable to finish it.

There are many types of fears that everybody faces in their lives. Some of the common types are feeling terrified of heights, flying, public speaking and intimacy.


The anxiety is brought about from past personal frightening or humiliating experience. It could also have been caused from reading or watching something horrifying and then emotionalizing the experience.



How to Overcome Fear


bullet2 Acknowledge it.

Some people are frightened but don't want to admit. They give excuses to hide their apprehensions.


Identify the thing that you are afraid of. The frightened feeling relates to thoughts of getting hurt or humiliated, losing someone or something and protection against them. Knowing the source helps because it's easier to rationalize.



bullet2 Get realistic.

Look back and see how many of the alarming thoughts actually materialize in your reality. Do you agree that most of them did not happen?


There are situations where you must face head on especially those that you've not experienced but gathered from exaggerated sources. Use your intelligence and not your emotions.



bullet2 Explore your thoughts.

Get suspicious and explore your thoughts. You may discover critical inner voices and vivid reruns of bygone incidents from your memory bank. It could have been only one incident in your childhood that you are bringing to the present.


Can you see yourself hanging to the shadows of your past? Reject the disapproving voices and pictures and stand up to them. Clear away your unfinished business. Leave the memories behind.



bullet2 Make the shift

The experience that you have gone through is history. It is still playing in your mind because you have subconsciously hypnotized yourself into believing it.


If you are afraid of public speaking for example, enroll yourself with toastmaster or something similar to learn how to perform in public.


There are also others ways to overcome your phobias. You can try the NLP technique of switching. Subliminal messages are effective to help override the old mental conditioning. Or you can reprogram your mind and eliminate your anxiety using hypnosis.



bullet2 Use creative visualization.

Use creative visualization to change your behavior and to eliminate your anxieties. See yourself acting boldly. Visualize the outcome that you want daily especially before you sleep and upon awakening.


At the same time affirm to yourself that you choose to act with confidence. Bring forth the related emotions. See it, say it and feel it.
