"Any man's life will be filled with constant and unexpected encouragement if he makes up his mind to do his level best each day." - Booker T. Washington

Encouragement is the boost you or someone else need during times of distress. At times you can't help it but make mistakes or suffer loss of some kind. This is the time when you don't require more instructions or orders but support.

When your physical, mental and emotional energies are drained you'll need to find ways to switch your state of mind. You need to gain back the confidence and motivation to continue what you have started.

What can you do?

  • Rise above self-pity.

You have to pep yourself. You need to remind yourself that whatever you are experiencing is temporary as long as you do not give up. You have to be more aggressive and hard on yourself. You must keep your focus on your goals. Don't let the fear of the future and obstacles stop you. Keep your visualization positive. Continue to take action because it is the best remedy to break your limiting pattern.

  • Connect with people who offer back up.

Your relationship with others can make a difference. Being around the right people provides you with an opportunity to gain something of value. Choose to spend your time with people who will push you to get back up. You need friends who can nudge you to get back on track and support your efforts.

  • Choose your environment.

When you are down, go to a place that will lift you up. Pick an atmosphere where you are able to enhance your capabilities. Choose an environment that gives you a positive impact on your attitude and actions.

  • Read and listen more.

Reading and listening to something of value and uplifting always work. Words of encouragement from books and audio materials offer you comfort and assurance. You will learn things outside your knowledge and expertise or those that you have failed to notice.

How to encourage others.

  • Offer kind words and consolation.

Generous kind words or gestures would really help shift the state or mind. Your kindness reveal your character and lift the spirit of those who need some enrichment. When you enrich the life of others, you'll benefit from it yourself because what you give you'll get back.

  • Remind them of their goals and the reasons behind.

When we face challenges, we tend to forget our goals. Help someone out of their doldrums by asking them to remember their goals and the reasons they set out to achieve them. You can do that by encouraging them to talk about their dreams and desires. When they can bring out enough compelling reasons, they will get inspired again. Let them feel the pains and the pleasures of their choices.

  • Show them how.

You can offer encouragement through your actions and results. Teach people by leading and guiding. Show them through examples and illustrations. Help people identify their strengths and see their potentials.

Getting knocked down is bound to happen. Life almost always presents you with challenges to test you for your own personal growth. Remind yourself that to gain the best from it, you must crawl, climb or push yourself to rise again. You are the best person and actually the only person who will determine whether you stay down or move up.
