Making a Career Change

At some point in life, people do decide to make a career change or a switch in profession due to job burnout, a desire to diversify or for career growth and advancement.


There are also people who have no alternative but to choose and decide on a different vocation because of circumstances like after losing a job because of downsizing, due to ill health or a change in location or for personal reasons.


There are also many people who stick to one job until they retire because of the benefits and privileges, complacency, security, commitment, love or because they are too scared to venture out.


If you are thinking of making a change in your career, here's a list of in demand jobs according to Boston.com. The list is arranged based on the highest average salary paid.

Though a financial manager gets the highest average salary, it's a mixed demand. A social and human service assistant pays so much less but is the demand is very high. And according to the report, a pharmacist is in excellent demand.

Here's some advice and tips for choosing your new career. If you don't have the qualifications but are interested in do some other type of work, you can always put in the efforts. But you will have to go through some discomforts like having to go back to school or take evening classes or online degree and face a reduced or no income until you finish your education and secure the job.


But what's equally important is to know if the job suits your personality. Doing something that doesn't match your personal values will frustrate you in the long run, causing a job burnout and frustrations.


Age is an issue in certain jobs. By now you should know if your age meets the requirement of the profession that you want to get into. There are quite a number of jobs that emphasize on other qualifications like work experience, personality, skills and knowledge.


Before you make a career change, be mentally prepared. You will go through a different working environment and face new challenges. You'll have to start over; learning about your new industry and employer. You may have to spend extra hours to show your skills and capabilities.


But that shouldn't scare you. You have done it before when you secured your first job. You are probably more experienced and skilled now to take new challenges. It also gives you the opportunity to broaden your circle of friends and contacts.
