Acquiring Skills

Acquiring skills and mastering them will improve the level of your present achievement and bring you closer to your other goals in life.

Everyone has the ability to do something well and develop proficiency. What is required is a strong passion to grow and learn. Once you decide what you want to have, to do and become, it becomes easier to acquire the knowledge.

Acquiring skills take specific knowledge and training. Becoming competent or mastering certain ability or improving a weak area requires persistent and focused efforts. When you develop and expand your know-how in one area, you are able to use it in other areas of your life.

Tips on Acquiring Skills

bullet2 Take inventory.

List down what you are already capable of doing without effort and another one comprising of what you want to acquire, improve or master.

  1. Problem solving

  2. Communication

  3. Leadership

  4. Thinking

  5. Study

  6. Management

  7. Life

  8. Personal

  9. Social

bullet2 Model other achievers.

You can learn from modeling a person's behavior, belief and physiology. When you observe how someone does something well and learn by doing the same, you will get the same result. Visualizing yourself with the ability would really help speed up your progress.

bullet2 Modeling yourself.

Another way is to look at your past success, at whatever you did very well without even thinking about it. Regardless of how you doubt your capability, there is at least one thing that you can do extremely well that some people marvel at your effectiveness. Self-modeling your success is one of the ways in acquiring skills that you are weak at and need to improve.

bullet2 Read and study.

You can learn by reading. There are numerous "how-to" books available written on almost every subject that you can think of. Study thoroughly the subjects that will put your goals within reach. Knowledge and consistent action increase the depth of your success and mastery. You may need to keep looking and reading until you find the answer. Mastery is a learned ability. There are no limits to what you can learn and gain from reading. You then train yourself to develop the proficiency.

bullet2 Repeat.

Repetition and practice improve your ability for accomplishment. As you persist, you get better. You are conditioning your mind until it becomes a habit. You may make mistakes and do badly. You need to get going. Every bit helps and no matter how difficult it feels in the beginning, you will get better by practicing diligently.

bullet2 Work harder on yourself.

You upgrade yourself by studying, doing and experiencing. No matter how small the effort you put in initially will increase your personal growth gradually. All you need to do is work at it long and hard enough. An hour a day practicing what you wish to become good at creates the possibility of mastering it. Mastering communication, for example, will help improve your leadership, social and life skills. This will then expand the other areas in your life.
