The Importance of Accountability

Accountability is the act of accepting responsibility and being accountable for one's action or inaction that produces a certain result. And why is taking personal responsibility important?

It's because your future are not in the hands of the leaders, your parents, spouses, etc. They are in yours. If you keep on looking for someone to blame, you'll remain stagnant and never move ahead and use your real potential.

Here's how Michael Armstrong illustrated it.

"The ancient Romans had a tradition: whenever one of their engineers constructed an arch, as the capstone was hoisted into place, the engineer assumed accountability for his work in the most profound way possible: he stood under the arch."

How many of you are willing to "stand under" your actions, inaction and decisions and act responsibly? Are you prepared to admit fault or failure when it occurs? Are you one of them who like to blame others or has an excuse ready so that you don't have to be answerable and responsible?

How to Act Responsibly

Do you agree with Anita Septimus when she said that you don't choose the day you enter the world and you don't choose the day you leave. It's what you do in between that make all the difference.

You may blame your culture, the society and your upbringing on how your life has turned out. But at a certain stage, you have to quit pointing fingers and take responsibility. If you have not had much personal growth and success in life, it's your fault.

It's because you were so afraid to try things and leave your comfort zone? You have neglected to do the things that you ought to do? It can be as simple as feeding your mind daily, through reading and listening to something of value. Or you have never bothered to question your limiting beliefs? You've not pondered about how your self talk and your imagination have created the lack in your life.

Even if it was someone else's fault, you have a part in it. You could have done, said or thought of something that brought about the situation. You may have been expecting it. The law of attraction works all the time.

Forgive the people who have hurt you and accept full responsibility from this day. Don't be afraid to take the first step into a new beginning. Think and expect great things to happen. If things don't work out as you have anticipated, bear in mind that there is a reason behind it and you will stumble upon something better.

If you have done all that you can, have a strong belief in your own worth and passionate about what you're doing, great accomplishments will follow. Life works that way.
